This Month’s NerdRoast: Burundi Kirundo
Hi everyone,
As the year winds down, I’m excited to share this month’s coffee: Burundi Kirundo. I haven’t roasted beans from Burundi before, so I’ve been really focused on the process and the development of this roast.
Burundi, a small landlocked country in East Africa, is known for its lush highlands, rich cultural heritage, and ideal conditions for growing some of the world’s most sophisticated coffees. The Kirundo region of Burundi is renowned for its high-altitude coffee cultivation and vibrant, complex flavor profiles. We’ve roasted it to a medium 410°F to highlight its bright acidity and delicate sweetness while preserving its rich, nuanced character.
The Origin: The Kirundo region, nestled in northern Burundi, has high altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 meters, fertile volcanic soil, and a temperate climate. The farmers in this region primarily cultivate Bourbon and related varietals, which are known for their rich flavors and elegant profiles. The fully washed processing method of this bean ensures a clean, crisp cup that allows the coffee’s inherent qualities to shine.
Tasting Notes: This bean will taste a little different. Burundi Kirundo offers a combination of citrus and stone fruit flavors, complemented by floral and caramelly undertones. Look for bright notes of lemon, orange, and tart berries, balanced by the sweetness of honey and butterscotch. The cup finishes with subtle hints of jasmine and black tea, creating a truly sophisticated and layered experience.
Roasting Notes: Roasted to a medium 410°F, this profile enhances the coffee's natural brightness while rounding out its acidity with deeper caramelized flavors. The result is a well-balanced cup with a smooth, medium body and a silky mouthfeel. This roast level preserves the complex fruitiness and floral aromas, making it an elegant choice for both pour-over and espresso.
Burundi coffees are celebrated for their vibrant and intricate flavor profiles, and this month’s bean is no exception. I hope you enjoy every sip of this unique coffee. As always, your feedback is invaluable, so please share your thoughts!
Thank you, Tony
